Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Mike Flanagan found dead

mike flanagan found deadBALTIMORE — Mike Flanagan, a former Cy Young winner and part of the Baltimore Orioles 1983 World Series championship team, has died. He was 59.

Authorities found a body outside Flanagan’s home in Monkton, Md. on Wednesday afternoon. Hours later, the Orioles confirmed that Flanagan – who served the team as a pitcher, front office executive and television broadcaster – was dead.

“I am so sorry to hear about Mike’s passing. He was a good friend and teammate,” said Hall of Fame third baseman Cal Ripken Jr., a former teammate of Flanagan’s. “… Mike was an Oriole through and through and he will be sorely missed by family, friends and fans. This is a sad day.”

Flanagan was a crafty left-hander who went 167-143 with a 3.90 ERA over 18 seasons with Baltimore and Toronto. He didn’t possess an overpowering fastball, but won a fair share of games by depending on a slow curve, a sinker and a changeup.

Flanagan received the Cy Young Award with the Orioles in 1979 after going 23-9 with a 3.08 ERA and five shutouts. The Orioles lost the World Series that year in seven games to Pittsburgh. (more…)

Summitt, 59, continues to teach, and that is negligence Tuesday’s shocking news that causes it to be appear as though she’s looking lower her disease with similar icy glare she made famous while winning eight national titles, 1,071 games and also the respect of the nation that did not pay much focus on women’s sports dads and moms when she was becoming an adult.

Summitt, entering her 39th season as coach in the College of Tennessee, got diagnosing in May and told the planet about this Tuesday mid-day. Reaction was shock giving method to dismay, tempered by popularity of her fighting spirit.

“It’s like discovering a detailed member of the family is ill,” stated transportation safety consultant Kevin Galbreath, a UT alumnus and fervent fan. (more…)

Maria Sharapova Wins Cincy Title, Beats Jelena Jankovic In Final

CINCINNATI — No meltdown for Maria Sharapova in this Cincinnati final. She put five sterling points together, and that was enough.

Sharapova overcame a first-set letdown on Sunday, rallying to beat Jelena Jankovic 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 for the championship of the Western & Southern Open.

The fourth-seeded Russian survived a match full of service breaks – 16 in all, seven in the final set alone – for her second title of the season. Sharapova’s best moments came in the tiebreaker, when she won the last five points to even the match.

“That’s pretty much it, putting five points together that were well-played,” she said.

Such stretches were rare in a ragged match that lasted 2 hours, 49 minutes and had a pair of brief rain delays.

The 14th-ranked Jankovic extended her streak of 17 months without a singles title. She won in Cincinnati in 2009, but hasn’t gotten a championship since Indian Wells on March 21 last year. (more…)
