BALTIMORE — Mike Flanagan, a former Cy Young winner and part of the Baltimore Orioles 1983 World Series championship team, has died. He was 59.

Authorities found a body outside Flanagan’s home in Monkton, Md. on Wednesday afternoon. Hours later, the Orioles confirmed that Flanagan – who served the team as a pitcher, front office executive and television broadcaster – was dead.

“I am so sorry to hear about Mike’s passing. He was a good friend and teammate,” said Hall of Fame third baseman Cal Ripken Jr., a former teammate of Flanagan’s. “… Mike was an Oriole through and through and he will be sorely missed by family, friends and fans. This is a sad day.”

Flanagan was a crafty left-hander who went 167-143 with a 3.90 ERA over 18 seasons with Baltimore and Toronto. He didn’t possess an overpowering fastball, but won a fair share of games by depending on a slow curve, a sinker and a changeup.

Flanagan received the Cy Young Award with the Orioles in 1979 after going 23-9 with a 3.08 ERA and five shutouts. The Orioles lost the World Series that year in seven games to Pittsburgh.

“We were a family,” former teammate and Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer said after doing the Orioles telecast Wednesday night. “It’s devastating.”

Flanagan also played for Baltimore’s 1983 championship team, finishing 12-4 despite missing nearly three months with ligament damage in his left knee.

He was 141-116 with Baltimore and is a member of the team’s Hall of Fame. Flanagan was also the final Oriole to pitch at Memorial Stadium, Baltimore’s home from 1954-1991.

His career with Toronto was not as profound. Traded from Baltimore to the Blue Jays on August 31, 1987, for pitchers Oswaldo Peraza and Jose Mesa, he went 3-2 with Toronto that season, then 13-13 and 8-10.

He signed as a free agent with Baltimore in 1991 and pitched out of the bullpen during his final two seasons.

After his playing career, Flanagan worked in the Orioles’ front office as vice president for baseball operations and executive VP. In recent years, including this season, he did color commentary for the team’s TV network.

“It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of my friend Mike Flanagan earlier this evening,” Orioles owner Peter Angelos said in a statement. “In over a quarter century with the organization, Flanny became an integral part of the Orioles family, for his accomplishments both on and off the field. His loss will be felt deeply and profoundly by all of us with the ballclub and by Orioles fans everywhere who admired him.”

Pat Summitt, the coach with increased wins than other people attending college basketball history, lady or guy, has early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s disease type.

Summitt, 59, continues to teach, and that is negligence Tuesday’s shocking news that causes it to be appear as though she’s looking lower her disease with similar icy glare she made famous while winning eight national titles, 1,071 games and also the respect of the nation that did not pay much focus on women’s sports dads and moms when she was becoming an adult.

Summitt, entering her 39th season as coach in the College of Tennessee, got diagnosing in May and told the planet about this Tuesday mid-day. Reaction was shock giving method to dismay, tempered by popularity of her fighting spirit.

“It’s like discovering a detailed member of the family is ill,” stated transportation safety consultant Kevin Galbreath, a UT alumnus and fervent fan.

“Pat Summitt is our John Wooden,” Baylor women’s coach Kim Mulkey stated. “Regardless of the number of national titles (other coaches) win, there should never be another Pat.”

Summitt authored a wide open letter towards the college community Tuesday. “I intend to continue being your coach,” she authored. “Clearly, I recognize I might possess some restrictions with this particular condition since you will see good quality days plus some bad days. For your reason, I’ll be depending on my small outstanding training staff for the first time.Inch

Alzheimer’s disease is not curable. That’s possibly the only real known quantity in most this. What is coming up next is mainly concerning the unknown – how her condition might progress, how stress might affect it, how her gamers might respond to all of the attention centered on the healthiness of their coach.

What is Dementia Symptoms?

CINCINNATI — No meltdown for Maria Sharapova in this Cincinnati final. She put five sterling points together, and that was enough.

Sharapova overcame a first-set letdown on Sunday, rallying to beat Jelena Jankovic 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 for the championship of the Western & Southern Open.

The fourth-seeded Russian survived a match full of service breaks – 16 in all, seven in the final set alone – for her second title of the season. Sharapova’s best moments came in the tiebreaker, when she won the last five points to even the match.

“That’s pretty much it, putting five points together that were well-played,” she said.

Such stretches were rare in a ragged match that lasted 2 hours, 49 minutes and had a pair of brief rain delays.

The 14th-ranked Jankovic extended her streak of 17 months without a singles title. She won in Cincinnati in 2009, but hasn’t gotten a championship since Indian Wells on March 21 last year.

“This match could have gone either way,” she said. “I had my chances. It showed the match is not over until you shake the hand.”

Jankovic shook hands and then sat in her chair after the match, biting a white towel while staring straight ahead, thinking about what had just happened. The match ended when her baseline forehand sailed wide.

Despite the loss, Jankovic was upbeat. She came to Cincinnati feeling rusty and lacking confidence after playing few matches lately and having little success.

“I’m pretty unpredictable,” she said. “If somebody told me I was going to play a final here, I would right away sign the paper.”

It was a sweet about-face for Sharapova, who reached the finals in Cincinnati last year against Kim Clijsters, got three match points in the second set, then melted down.

“It’s been a great year for me so far,” Sharapova said. “It can always be better or worse. I’m definitely proud I’ve gone further than last year, after the disappointing loss here last year.”

This time, she came out on top in a tournament that had the women’s bracket torn apart by injuries, illness and upsets.

Clijsters withdrew because of an abdominal strain – she’s also out the U.S. Open, where she’s won the last two titles. Venus Williams was sidelined by a virus. Sister Serena Williams dropped out at midweek with a sore toe. Third-seeded Victoria Azarenka had to quit because of a hand injury.

With Clijsters out, Caroline Wozniacki became the top-seeded player in the draw – and lost her first match.

The tournament ended with a pairing of players who had only one singles title between them this season, Sharapova’s championship at Rome.

Jankovic, who was ranked No. 1 as recently as 2008, has struggled with back, wrist and ankle injuries during her long run with only one singles title. The Serb reached only one other final this season, losing at Monterrey, and had a chance to end the 17-month drought after getting off to a good start on Sunday.

Rain briefly delayed the start of the match, and again for a few minutes in the fourth game, when the players stayed in their chairs waiting for it to stop.

Sharapova was more aggressive at the start, breaking Jankovic’s serve twice while pulling ahead 4-1. She won 19 of the first 27 points and appeared to be in control. That’s when Jankovic changed the momentum, breaking Sharapova three times in a row. She won the set when Sharapova double faulted.

It was reminiscent of last year, when Sharapova wasted the three match points against Clijsters and ended up losing 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. This time, she managed to pull out of the nosedive by saving the second set. She won the last five points of the tiebreaker, hitting her shots as hard as she could with everything on the line.

Neither player could hold serve in the third set, which started with six straight breaks. Sharapova threw back her head and pumped her left arm after holding serve – finally! – to go up 4-3.

“You find yourself in the third set, you’ve played two hours, it’s a finals match – obviously a lot of emotion going through it,” Sharapova said.

When Jankovic doubled faulted twice to lose the next game on her serve, Sharapova was in position to close it out.

Krav Maga is the fighting technique developed by the Israeli armed forces. The Hebrew phrase means ‘contact combat’.

As the city’s streets are becoming increasingly unsafe, the Krav Maga session was just what the doctor ordered. Even the torrential rains could not dampen spirits as people of all ages and sizes turned up for the crash course in self-defence.

During the two sessions of two hours each, Franklin Joseph, a member of the International Krav Maga Federation, taught participants techniques to deal with situations ranging from chain-snatching to a headlock.

Joseph explained, “We are not training you to be vigilantes or attack machines whose first reaction is to beat somebody up. We are training you to be able to defend yourself in a situation and also get away without getting hurt. You can be thin, tall, fat, anything and still manage to defend yourself.”

He explained the psychological theory behind Krav Maga before moving on to the practical demonstration with 20 of his volunteers. Groin kicks, nose punches, thumb twisting, arm twisting – everything that was effective without being technically challenging – can be used in Krav Maga.

The ladies lapped it up. From school girls to middle-aged housewives, everybody wanted to know how to be safe. Fourteen-year-olds Sanjana Khinvasra and Tanisha Harsha wanted to be prepared for all the horror stories they had heard from college-going seniors about eve-teasing. Saroj Kunda, a 46-year-old home maker, wanted help to defend herself from road rage. She said, “I have had many instances, where people have walked up to my window and threatened me. I need to be able to defend myself.” Even Jalpa Joshi, a 6’ 1” tall techie, said she needed help on the streets.

“It is not about how tough you look. These guys just won’t stop,” she said as she practised getting away from a choke hold. For Tracy Yach and her daughter Gabriella, this was an essential skill. The South African family, living in Bangalore for a year now, doesn’t have complaints about the safety of women on Bangalore’s streets. “But you can never be too careful,” Tracy said.

Surprisingly, a majority of the audience were men. Anil Naidu, a 52-year-old stock broker in the city, said he wanted to learn Krav Maga as he was being followed for the last year by different characters. Gorde Ganesh was equipping himself against a repeat of a previous incident. The techie said, “I was attacked on Bannerghatta Road about five years ago and robbed. I don’t want that happening again.”

Whatever the story of each participant, the unifying thought was that they wanted to feel safe.

Tarvaris Jackson is in as the Seattle Seahawks next quarterback and Matt Hasselbeck is reportedly looking elsewhere.

A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press Tuesday that Jackson has agreed to terms with the Seahawks and is expected to sign a contract Friday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because free agents aren’t allowed to sign contracts until Friday.

The Seattle Times first reported Jackson’s agreement.

Reports surfaced Tuesday afternoon that the Seahawks told Hasselbeck he was no longer in their future plans. Yahoo! Sports first reported the Hasselbeck decision on Twitter. Hasselbeck and his agent did not return messages left by the AP.

The decision to move on from Hasselbeck contradicted Seattle coach Pete Carroll’s pronouncement in January that re-signing Hasselbeck was Seattle’s No. 1 priority. The two sides could not reach an agreement before the NFL lockout.

Hasselbeck spent the past 10 seasons in Seattle and for much of that time was the face of the franchise. He took the Seahawks to their only Super Bowl appearance and captained Seattle to five division titles. He leaves as the team’s all-time leader in numerous passing categories.

But the signs that Hasselbeck’s time in Seattle could be coming to a close started a year ago when the team acquired Charlie Whitehurst from San Diego. Whitehurst was supposed to challenge Hasselbeck for the job before the 2010 season, but his only two starts last season came in games Hasselbeck was injured. One of those starts was the season finale when Seattle beat St. Louis 16-6 to wrap up the NFC West title with a 7-9 record.

Hasselbeck then seemed to affirm his importance to the franchise by leading Seattle to a stunning NFC first-round playoff upset of New Orleans before the Seahawks lost to Chicago in the NFC divisional playoff. After that loss, Carroll said the Seahawks’ No. 1 priority was re-signing Hasselbeck.

But it won’t be Hasselbeck back under center when the season begins on Sept. 11 at San Francisco.

Whitehurst was one of the first Seahawks to arrive at their training facility on Tuesday morning after catching a late flight back to the Northwest and not getting to his apartment until about 1 a.m. Still, he was driving through the gates of Seahawks headquarters shortly after 8 a.m. ready to pick up his playbook.

“You’re more experienced; it goes for all of us. There were a bunch of new guys this past season,” Whitehurst said. “I think everybody is probably feeling pretty confident about this season.”

Instead of Whitehurst battling Hasselbeck for the starting job, it’ll be Jackson. Later in the day, after learning the reports of Hasselbeck’s departure, Whitehurst seemed to realize his chance.

“It’s as good an opportunity as I’m going to get and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

In Minneapolis, Jackson was ushered aside most of the last two seasons in favor of Brett Favre. Now he’ll get a fresh start in Seattle and be reunited with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who is in charge of revamping Seattle’s passing game. Bevell spent the previous five seasons as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator.

Rust might be a problem for Jackson. He’s played in just 11 games and started only once the past two seasons after making 17 starts during the 2007 and `08 seasons.

Hasselbeck had been instrumental in organizing offseason workouts for players in the Seattle area and working with the University of Washington on using their facilities. Some players had been extremely outspoken on Twitter in urging the Seahawks to re-sign the veteran QB.

“Gotta say thanks for giving me a chance to get my career rolling,” Seahawks receiver Mike Williams wrote to Hasselbeck on Twitter Tuesday afternoon. “U’ll always Rep the 12th, see u in the Ring of Honor sir.”

Rich Moran, the agent for Seahawks offensive lineman Stacy Andrews, confirmed Tuesday his client has been informed he will be released. Andrews was scheduled to make $5.25 million this season, but was likely to be a backup after Seattle drafted linemen James Carpenter and John Moffitt.

The Seahawks also agreed to terms with 19 undrafted free agents on Tuesday. Highlighting the list was Boise State safety Jeron Johnson, Nebraska safety Rickey Thenarse and Nebraska defensive end Pierre Allen.

Kolobnev of Russia already withdrew from the Tour de France 2011 race.

The International Cycling Union issued the following statement:

Earlier today, the UCI advised the Russian rider Alexandr Kolobnev of an Adverse Analytical Finding (presence of Hydrochlorothiazide based on the reportfrom the WADA accredited laboratory in Châtenay-Malabry) in the urine sample collected from him at an in competition test at the Tour de France on 6 July 2011. Mr. Kolobnev has the right to request and attend the analysis of his B sample.

The UCI Anti-Doping Rules do not provide for a provisional suspension given the nature of the substance, which is a specified substance.

However the UCI is confident that his team will take the necessary steps to enable the Tour de France to continue in serenity and to ensure that their rider has the opportunity to properly prepare his defense in particular within the legal timeline, which allows four days for him to have his B sample analyzed.

About 17 hours after Yahoo reported the Lakers were suddenly closing in on former Cavs’ coach Mike Brown to replace Phil Jackson … the deal’s done. Chris Broussard of ESPN reports Brown is getting a 4-year, $18 million deal. The 4th year of the deal is optional – if the Lakers don’t exercise it, Brown will get $2.5 million.

It’s tough to gauge Brown on his brief career as a head coach – he knows defense, that much is clear; but whether or not he’ll be able to ignite a Lakers’ offense that fizzled in the postseason remains a question. Did it help Brown that he had LeBron at his first stop? How much credit does Brown get for taking a young LeBron and a bunch of spare parts to the NBA Finals? Or did LeBron carry Brown?

Earlier, SI reported that Kobe was surprised he wasn’t part of the decision-making process. Now, Kobe’s supposedly on board. I have a feeling this hiring will end spectacularly bad, but it’s tough to think about next season with the lockout looming.

It looks like ‘The Biggest Loser’ might have found another new trainer. According to reports, tennis star Anna Kournikova will join the NBC fitness show next season.

Kournikova will join new trainers Cara Castronuova and Brett Hoebel as the show undergoes major changes in the wake of Jillian Michaels’ departure from the hit show, X17 Online reports. Michaels announced her decision to leave last year in order to focus on starting a family.

An official announcement regarding Kournikova’s role on ‘Biggest Loser’ is expected after the show’s season finale on Tuesday.

Kournikova, who recently put her $9.4 million Miami mansion on the market, is certainly no stranger in the fitness world. A tennis player all her life, she debuted at the U.S. Open when she was just 15 years old and was named ESPN’s Hottest Female Athlete in 2002.

The tennis star has been dating singer Enrique Igelsias since late 2001.

Details are emerging on why Oscar De La Hoya has entered a treatment facility.

Insiders tell TMZ the boxer recently started dabbling in cocaine, a dangerous habit that contributed to infidelity in his marriage.

While De La Hoya has reportedly told friends he hasn’t hit rock bottom, he checked himself in to a rehab center in California a few weeks to take care of the issue before it got worse.

Said the former champion, soon after news of this decision was made public:

“After doing an honest evaluation of myself, I recognize that there are certain issues that I need to work on. Like everyone, I have my flaws, and I do not want to be one of those people that is afraid to admit and address those flaws.

“Throughout my career and my life, I have always met all challenges head-on, and this is no different. I am confident that with the support of my family and friends, I will become a stronger, healthier person.

“I ask for respect and privacy as my family and I go through this process.”
