Dead Island is probably the most realistic depiction of the inevitable and oncoming zombie apocalypse in video game history. It’s typified by desperation, sacrifice, frustration, terror and an overbearing sense of hopelessness.

But there’s a catch. Though the zombie apocalypse may occasionally be grimly satisfying or fleetingly triumphant when you survive another night, there’s one thing it almost certainly won’t be.

Dead Island, to be sold Sept. 6, is a first-person zombie action title that includes melee combat, thousands of in-game weapons, and open-world setting, and co-op multiplayer for up to four users.

The final game is said to include weapon customization, leveling system, and unlockable skill trees.

It carries a pre-sale price of $59.99.

Steve Jobs, the visionary co-founder of Apple Inc. and driving force behind a string of products that revolutionized the consumer-electronics industry, stepped down as chief executive on Wednesday.

But the move wasn’t a completely unexpected one.

His departure from the CEO post had been widely anticipated ever since Jobs took an extended medical leave earlier this year to attend to undisclosed health reasons. He underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer seven years ago and had a liver transplant two years ago.

In his letter of resignation to the company board, Jobs said, “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.”

Though widely expected, the announcement threw the future of the technology juggernaut into flux, given Jobs’ deep personal association with Apple’s most successful innovations, including the Macintosh computer line, the iPod portable music player and the iPhone smart phone.

Though the stock dropped nearly $20 in after-hours trading, some analysts recommended that investors take the news in stride because Jobs’ marginal health condition, which has been hanging over Apple and its stock price for years, should not come as a surprise.

“Don’t panic, remain calm,” said Colin Gillis, an analyst at BGC Partners. “This is not unexpected.”

“He clearly has some major health issues going on,” Gillis said. But “deteriorating or not deteriorating, chairman is the perfect role for him to continue providing artistic input.”

Apple named Tim Cook, the company’s well-regarded operations chief who had run the company in Jobs’ absence, as chief executive. Jobs assumed the role of chairman of the board.

What’s weird is that Samsung seems to have had no idea any of this was going down until it was too late. Specifically, the order was given “without any hearing or presentation of evidence from Samsung,” according to Samsung spokesman Kim Titus, who confirmed with Bloomberg. Apparently this is pretty normal in Germany — plaintiffs must only prove that infringement occurred to get an injunction rolling, either preliminary or permanent, with no requirement to inform the other party. However, the court often only grants a preliminary injunction (like this one) when it believes that a subsequent permanent injunction will be granted, as well. If it’s not and Apple loses, the Cupertino-based company will most certainly owe damages to Samsung.

According to German news service dpa, the injunction is entirely related to design and intellectual property right, rather than software- or hardware-related patents. Apple made it clear long before anything went down in Europe that it wasn’t pleased with the look and feel of the GalTab 10.1, and even went so far as say that Samsung copied Apple-style packaging, too. The word “slavishly” comes to mind. But there’s still a little sliver of hope for our European friends who’ve been just dying to play around with Samsung’s 10-inch slate. Anyway, Samsung has responded to the injunction, promising to “act immediately to defend our intellectual property rights through the ongoing legal proceedings in Germany and will continue to actively defend these rights throughout the world. [We will] take all necessary measures to ensure Samsung’s innovative mobile communications devices are available to customers in Europe and around the world.”

Meanwhile, Apple seems to have moved on to yet another competitor, reports SlashGear. Motorola and Apple have been entwined in litigation for the past few months, but only after digging into the Galaxy Tab news was it uncovered that Apple has already filed a complaint in Europe regarding the design of the Honeycomb-powered Xoom. Since Samsung had no idea the injunction had gone through, it’s pretty likely that Motorola is only becoming aware of this now, as it spreads across the web. Speculation suggests that Apple is going straight for a permanent injunction with Motorola, since the Xoom has been around long enough to warrant it.

The words “play” and “book” are a bit of an odd choice for RIM’s latest attempt at consumer relevance, a tablet that, at its core, runs one of the most hardcore and industry-friendly operating systems known to man. The OS is QNX and the hardware is, of course, the BlackBerry PlayBook. It’s an enterprise-friendly offering that’s also out to conquer the consumer tablet ecosphere, hoping to follow in the footsteps of the BlackBerry handsets that have filled the pockets of corporate executives and BBM addicts around the globe.

It’s something of a serious tablet when compared to the competition running software from Apple and Google and, while it certainly has games, its biggest strengths are rather more boring. It does a really great job at displaying PowerPoint presentations, for example, and has the security chops to keep last quarter’s dismal sales figures from falling into the wrong hands. Exciting stuff? No, but useful features for sure, and regardless of whether you find those intriguing or boring this is RIM’s seven-inch, Flash-having but 3G-lacking tablet clad in an unassuming but extremely sophisticated exterior. It’s what’s running behind the glass that disappoints.

Apple has finally overcome the problems, including paint peeling when exposed to heat, with the manufacturing process of the white iPhone, according to Bloomberg. The device will reportedly be available from both AT&T and Verizon.

The white version of the iPhone 4 doesn’t bring any technical improvements, but Apple confirmed its existence in 2010, and constant delays turned it into a myth that many thought would never be a reality.

Of course, with the iPhone 5 launch getting closer and closer, the idea of owning a white iPhone 4 feels less enticing, but we’re sure Apple will find plenty of buyers for the device — if it ever actually hits the market.

In a statement, Cisco says that it is realigning its consumer businesses to “support four of its five key company priorities.” On the subject of the Flip, Cisco says it will “close down the Flip business and support current FlipShare customers and partners with a transition plan.”

Cisco purchased Flip maker Pure Digital for $590 million in 2009. At the time, the move struck some as odd, but the potential of a Wi-Fi enabled Flip made some sense. Sort of.

Such a product has never materialized (even if FCC reports do indicate such a device exists). Meanwhile, the allure of the Flip — low cost video that can easily be uploaded to websites like Facebook or YouTube — was superseded by video cameras built into smartphones. In addition to the video being as good (if not better) on modern smartphones, phones have a built-in data connection and can upload video directly to the web — no computer required.

It looks like the Flip was simply an intermediary product. Much like the netbook, which has been largely usurped by lower-cost full laptops and tablets like the iPad, the Flip was simply a product that disrupted markets before moving aside for a true successor.

Google celebrated Yuri Gagarin’s 50th anniversary of the first human spaceflight on Tuesday with a new doodle on their homepage.

The doodle captures Mr. Gagarin in a spacesuit forming the infamous “Google” logo.

“It’s interesting to see the different sketches and illustrations Google puts together,” Bill Richardson, a resident of San Francisco, told Politically Illustrated. “It’s their way of competing with Bing’s daily eye candy.”

Mr. Gagarin was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut in the early 60s. He was the first human to journey into outer space when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on April 12, 1961.

He died in 1968 when a Mig 15 training jet he was piloting crashed. He was 34-years-old.

“I wonder how each new Google doodle improves traffic for the company,” said Mr. Richardson. “I love viewing new Google doodles!”
