Climate Gate Scandal Makes Global Warming Hot Topic at UN Summit
December 3rd, 2009 | by |The Climate Gate scandal, is making global warming the hot topic at the international climate conference in Copenhagen next week. The leak of hundreds of thousands of documents and emails from the University of East Angilia’s Climate Research Unit in the United Kingdom has global warming skeptics excited and even more dubious.
One of the three major agenda items of the conference is specifically about climate change. Y’vo de Boer, head of the United National agency heading up the climate conference, said yesterday a priority is to get delegates to agree to establish a fund of about $10 billion to assist vulnerable nations to adapt to the harmful effects of changing climates.
The climate gate scandal has global warming doubtfuls in arms and much less likely to commit resources to a program they see as now being even less of an issue and more of a hoax.
“This raises questions about some of the very U.N. science that forms the basis of what’s going to be discussed in Copenhagen,” Liberman said in the Fox News report. “There’s a lot to be concerned about here. At the very least the President shouldn’t agree to anything in Copenhagen until we get to the bottom of Climate-Gate and find out just how much there is to global warming scientist that we can still trust.”
The climate gate scandal leak happened last week just before President Obama announced his intention to attend the conference and try to drive new greenhouse gas emissions targets.
Greenhouse gas emissions reductions are another hot topic de Boer has outlined for the conference, as is setting up institutions to carry out immediate steps to cut emissions, develop low-carbon energy plans and share new clean technology.
But the focus continues to be on the global warming issue, thanks to the info leak. The emails and documents allude to bumping up the real temperatures to show an increasing trend. An email by climate research scientist, Dr. Phil Jones has gotten a lot of attention in particular. An excerpt reads, I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd [sic] from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline”
Jones was interviewed by police about the scandal Wednesday.
Currently 98 of the 192 members of the U.N. are planning to attend the conference.
