Keflezighi, 34, became the first American since Alberto Salazar (1982) to win New York. Keflezighi, a native of Eritrea, became a U.S. citizen at age 13.

The 2004 Olympic Games silver medalist, according to a report from USA Track and Field, pointed to the bold “USA” letters on his chest as he crossed the finish line in a personal best time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 15 seconds.

He knelt to the ground and broke into tears for fallen teammate Ryan Shay, who died during the Olympic Trials race in New York in 2007. That was the last time Keflezighi had run in New York.

Ryan Hall, viewed by many as the future of U.S. distance running and marathoning, finished fourth in 2:10:36.
